3 Ways to Get Rid of a Dry Beard Once and for All

You take a lot of time growing and maintaining your beard, whether it is lustrous and on-trend or short and simple. But, it isn’t always easy to keep a beard looking good, clean, and moisturized.

Also, having 'beardruff' or beard dandruff is a common complaint of a dry beard. No one wants to experience or be seen with dry flakes in their majestic mane.

Rest assured, help is out there. We have a few tricks up our sleeve to help you get rid of your dry beard once and for all.

Let's dive in!

Causes

No one thing causes a dry beard, but it’s likely a result of:

  • Sensitivity to products
  • Dry skin
  • Microorganisms

If your body is sensitive to strong chemicals and ingredients in skincare products, you’re more likely to get dry and itchy skin. Also, many of us get dry skin in colder months. Having dry skin under our beard that’s itchy and irritated creates unsightly skin flakes.

Lastly, sometimes our beards are affected by a fungus or yeast called Malassezia. This feeds on sebum (the oil your skin produces) and emits oleic acid, which some people are sensitive to.

When this happens, more skin cells grow and flake off and result in dandruff.

Whatever is causing your dry beard, caring for your beard and your skin will go a long way to keeping you and your beard happy.

So, what helps?

1. Keep It Clean

Use a beard and skin wash daily to keep your pride and joy clean and smelling good. Ideally, you want a mild, sulfate and paraben-free shampoo that cleans your beard and the skin beneath it.

You’re going to need something gentle because everyday across-the-counter shampoos usually aren't designed for facial hair. Often, they strip your beard of its natural oils and moisture.

2. Keep It Soft

If your skin is dry, you have to keep it moisturized to keep it softened and protected against the elements. Once you’ve cleansed your beard, you need to moisturize your skin and then treat your beard with some beard oil or balm.

Ideally, you’ll treat yourself to a product that’s irritant-free and has a blend of beautifully scented essential oils that aren’t going to clog your pores or make your beard look greasy.

If you opt for beard oil, look for a product that has a mix of carrier oils that give you moisture without grease and essential oils that have antifungal properties and smell amazing!

3. Keep It Groomed

Now your beard is clean, soft, and moisturized, give it a bit of extra attention with a soft brush. Brushing helps make your beard look good, and distributes your beard’s natural oils, so there’s no clogged pores or excess skin cells still hanging about.

Brushing also helps to train your hair to grow in the direction you want it to rather than having a life of its own!
